Shishito Pepper

Capsicum annum

Origin: Asia

Organic Non-GMO Certified

Total Growth Cycle: 120 days

Compact plants produce a plentiful harvest of Shishito peppers, which are sweet while they are green, and appear wrinkled. Try your hand at making blistered shishitos with olive oil and salt, or simply snack on them raw!

Tasting Guide

Tasting is recommended once ripe fruit begins to appear, from approximately day 90 onward.

Growing Tips

Pepper plants grow to be much larger than some of our other offerings, so to ensure they have the space they need to produce plenty of fruit we only place 9 seeds total on each sIO. These 9 seeds are placed in three specified holes of the sIO, in contrast with our herb or green sIOs, on which seeds are spread across the entire surface. These 9 seeds will need to be thinned down to just three plants following germination. Note that during the flowering and fruiting stages leaves may start to brown/yellow and some may even fall off. This is normal and because your plant us using its energy toward producing fruit rather than making new leaves and branches.

Nutrient Refill(s): 3 + 1 Water/Nutrient Change

When prompted to refill nutrients, pour measured nutrient packet into the basin, then add tap water gently through the sIO until it reaches the fourth tick mark. Nutrient additions will be prompted around days 40, 70, and 90 of the growth cycle.

There will also be one water and nutrient change, taking place on day 55, in which you will be prompted to dispose of the water in your basin, then replace it with fresh water and a new nutrient packet.

Expect to top up water about every two weeks once the plant reaches maturity. Your app will let you know when it is time for a water addition. When prompted to refill water, pour tap water gently through the sIO until the water level reaches the fourth and highest tick mark on the right side basin window.

While your seeds are germinating, your white and blue LED lights will be on dimly. Once you remove the germination cover, all LEDs (red, white and blue) will turn on. The maximum time lights will be on is 16 hours per day.

Growing Timeline

*Must be advanced by the user by this time by removing germination cover

Green indicates period for tasting

Phase 1

In this phase your plant will receive continuous misting to begin dissolving the nutrients in the sIO and jumpstart germination. Be sure to keep the black humidity cover on during this phase.

Phase 2

When at least one seed in each of the three holes has germinated, remove the black humidity cover and update app to transition to the Seedling phase. If germination occurs and the humidity cover is not removed within 10 days, the plant will die. If germination does not occur within 10 days contact support.

Phase 3

Cotyledons expand and grow, and true leaves are emerging.

Phase 4

At the beginning of this phase, you will be prompted to thin the seedlings down to one plant per hole. Please follow the instructions within your SproutsIO Grow app. Towards the end of this phase, you will receive prompts to check for flowers. Small green buds will appear and eventually blossom into white flowers, when you see the first of these white flowers, select “Yes” when the prompts asks if you have noticed flowers.

Phase 5

Be sure to follow the prompts to shake your plants, as this will ensure proper pollination of your plant. We recommend shaking gently once a day, more shaking means more fruits!

Phase 6

Fruiting & Mature Fruit

About 20 days after the first flower appears, you should begin to see small green fruits appearing. Be sure to report this when prompted in the app once you begin to see the fruits. Note that leaves during this time may start to brown/yellow and some may even fall off. This is normal and because your plant us using its energy toward producing fruit rather than making new leaves and branches.

Maturity begins when your fruits reaches mature sizing, approximately 1-2 inches in length, feel free to try your Shishitos as they grow!
