Traditionally produced in Italy, Genovese basil is the original basil variety used to make authentic pesto. With large, broad leaves and a classic flavor, this basil can be used to add color to any dish! Enjoy as a microgreen, petite or mature leaf.

Tasting Guide

Tasting is recommended from approximately 10 days onward, depending on your preference for basil size and flavor. Tasting period is highlighted in green in the Growing Timeline Overview.

Growing Tips

Germinates quickly and can be cut for a single regrowth at any point after the microgreens phase.

Nutrient Refill(s): 2

When prompted to refill nutrients, pour measured nutrient packet into the basin, then add tap water gently through the sIO until it reaches the fourth tick mark. Nutrient additions will be prompted around days 25 and 40 of the growth cycle.

Watering

Expect to top up water at least once (aside from when adding nutrients) during the growing cycle. When prompted to refill water, pour tap water gently through the sIO until the water level reaches the fourth and highest tick mark on the right side basin window. Water additions will be prompted around days 20 and 34 of the growth cycle.

Lighting

Basil requires light for germination, so while your seeds are germinating, all LED (red, white and blue) lights will be on dimly. Once you remove the germination cover, the intensity of the LED lights will increase slightly every day. The maximum time lights will be on is 16 hours per day.

Phase 1

Watering

In this phase your plant will receive continuous misting to begin dissolving the nutrients in the sIO and jumpstart germination. Be sure to keep the clear humidity cover on during this phase.

Phase 2

Germination

When the majority of seeds have germinated, remove the clear humidity cover and update app to transition to the Seedling growth phase. Remember to record in the app that you have removed the humidity cover. If germination occurs and the humidity cover is not removed within 6 days, the plant will die. If germination does not occur within 6 days contact support.

Phase 3

Seedling

Cotyledons expand and grow, and true leaves are emerging.

Phase 4

Microgreens

If harvesting basil microgreens, remove sIO disk from SproutsIO basin. Using scissors, cut the plants from the disk, cutting as close to the sIO top as possible. Record your harvest in the app. If not harvesting for microgreens, leave the plant as is.

Phase 5

Petite Basil

When prompted to refill nutrients, pour measured nutrient packet into the basin, then add tap water gently through the sIO until it reaches the fourth tick mark. If harvesting petite basil, remove sIO disk from SproutsIO basin. Using scissors, cut the plants from the disk, cutting as close to the sIO top as possible. Record your harvest in the app. If not harvesting for Petite Basil, leave the plant as is.

Phase 6

Mature Basil

Your plants will reach maturity around day 27 and will continue growing until day 60. Feel free to harvest any/all of your plants during this window. You may also need to adjust your lamp head during this phase if your plants grow too close to it, you will receive a notification to do so. When you’re ready to harvest, remove sIO disk from SproutsIO basin. Using scissors, cut the plants from the disk, cutting as close to the sIO top as possible. Record your harvest in the app.
